Description

This Spiced Apple Cider recipe is a warm, comforting drink that’s perfect for fall and winter. Infused with cinnamon, cloves, and fresh apples, it’s easy to make and can be customized to your liking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties)
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger (sliced)
  • 1 orange (sliced)
  • 6 cups water
  • ¼ cup maple syrup or brown sugar (optional for sweetness)
  • Optional: ½ cup rum, bourbon, or brandy for spiked cider

Instructions

  1. Wash and roughly chop the apples. There’s no need to peel or core them.
  2. In a large pot or slow cooker, combine the apples, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and ginger.
  3. Pour in the water and bring it to a simmer.
  4. Simmer on low for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally and mashing the apples as they soften.
  5. Once done, strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove solids.
  6. Taste the cider and adjust sweetness with maple syrup or brown sugar, if needed.
  7. Serve warm, garnished with a cinnamon stick or orange slice, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Adjust spices to your liking for a stronger or milder flavor.
  • Add alcohol after straining for a spiked version.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
